Designing and creating land yachts
Students design a land yacht, choosing appropriate materials to build their design. They focus on the quality of the materials for the purpose, and how they would create the design so that their yacht works effectively. They then race their yachts and measure speed and or distance whilst recording data. This lesson is an engaging way to incorporate both design technology and the mathematics curriculum. This design task aligns with the Australian Curriculum as it allows for students to plan, design, select materials suitable for a particular purpose and
produce a product. They can then test their design and critique and evaluate

Designing a Sports Complex
Children tend to respond enthusiastically when asked to design something that is of interest to them, and what 11-13 year old does not enjoy sports? This Assessment task is designed to elicit imagination whilst ensuring they include features specific to a sports complex. Whilst the students will be designing and creating a 2D image, the focus of the lesson is on area, perimeter, and scale. Students will develop an understanding of real world implementation of mathematical processes. This design task aligns with the Australian Curriculum as it allows for critiquing, exploring and investigating needs of society, generating, evaluating and designing ideas, planning, producing and evaluating
